3Shape Dental System Requirements: Separate CAD, Scanner and Server

A Dental System computer specification needs an exact release and role, not a generic list reused across every laboratory.

Use the release-specific source

The official Dental System requirements page currently contains separate sections for 2025, 2024, 2023 and 2022. Its 2025 requirements are published as image tables. Use the table for the intended installed release and obtain written confirmation of the proposed configuration from 3Shape or the reseller.

This guide does not transcribe the image-only numerical tables. Large-lab recommendations and older scanner requirements should not be substituted for a release-specific minimum. A machine used for design, acquisition and database hosting needs all applicable requirements checked.

Assign every workstation a role

Configuration request by role
RoleQuestions for the supplier
CAD clientRelease, modules, exact CPU/GPU/RAM and display requirements
Scanner stationScanner model, acquisition software and connection requirements
Database/order hostSupported location, capacity, permissions and backup
Combined workstationSimultaneous tasks and shared-resource support
Remote participantApproved access method, licensing and support scope

3Shape’s large-lab guidance recommends wired connections for scanner/server work and distinguishes local storage and networking responsibilities. These are architecture recommendations for that scope, not proof that a consumer NAS or remote connection is a supported live database.

Validate changes as a controlled migration

Before an upgrade, inventory scanner hardware, installed releases, plugins, order paths and license dependencies. Ask the supplier whether the intended release supports the entire configuration. Identify who restores the prior working state if the approved test fails.

Use an authorized practice order to check acquisition where applicable, opening, design save and the intended delivery step. Record exact versions and observed results. Backup planning belongs with the laboratory IT owner; a successful one-case test does not verify backup restoration or multi-user reliability.

Keep a dated confirmation with the purchase or change record. Review it again when a scanner, CAD release or host role changes, rather than carrying the same specification forward indefinitely.

Review boundary

Technical review pending — unverified locally. Unverified locally: Louie must validate terminology, actual workflow dependencies and practice-case applicability. Source review is not software or clinical validation.

Use these worksheets to make uncertainty visible. They do not authorize a clinical decision, repair, production release or unsupported software configuration. Preserve original records and record who approved each change.
