What does this dental CAD measurement actually measure?

Identify the tool, start point, target object and direction before comparing distance or thickness readings.

First answer

Before comparing two numbers, check whether they answer the same geometric question. Record the measurement mode, start location, target object or endpoint, units and design revision. A nearest-point reading and a user-selected point-to-point reading can describe different distances.

Match the tool to the question

The exocad documentation distinguishes these operations. Treat their definitions as prompts for verifying the installed tool, rather than assuming every label or control is identical in your release.

Original decision worksheet
Observation or taskAction and evidence
Point-to-point distanceTwo chosen endpoints: useful only when those endpoints are the intended comparison.
NearestA chosen start point and target surface: inspect the returned nearest location, not just the number.
OrthogonalA direction tied to the start surface changes the geometric question; check the returned location and target.
ThicknessThe documented tool chooses a corresponding surface point; inspect which surfaces and arrow it actually used.

Why two readings may disagree

Synthetic geometry example, not a dental acceptance target: a point-to-point test reads 0.80 mm to a chosen endpoint, while a nearest-surface test reads 0.60 mm to a different location. Different endpoints explain the difference without proving that either tool is wrong.

If both readings claim the same mode, compare object identity, selected points and revision before changing geometry. More decimal places do not resolve a mismatched target.

Repeat a measurement another person can inspect

On authorized training data, name the start region and target object, retain a view showing the markers and repeat the same question from the same revision. Record the tool's reported value with its units, not a value inferred from screenshot pixels.

Ask the reviewer: do these markers and the selected mode measure the relationship we intended? If the return point is unexpected, record that observation for the provider instead of substituting a more convenient reading.

Use the worksheet to separate geometry from acceptance

Fill the geometric question and observed result first. Then identify the instruction or responsible review that establishes an applicable acceptance criterion. A local reading does not prove whole-object minimum thickness, source-record accuracy, manufactured fit or clinical suitability.

Next step: attach the same target evidence to one bounded review request. If the criterion or mode remains uncertain, hold that decision while obtaining clarification; do not average incompatible measurements.

Validation and limits

Louie validation pending — unverified locally. Louie must confirm installed measurement-mode labels and target selection on authorized training geometry, including how the thickness tool chooses its corresponding surface. This guide supplies no material threshold, clinical acceptance value or measured accuracy claim.

Use internal references in the blank worksheet. Examples are hypothetical; applicable instructions and responsible approvals govern real work.
