Capture a reproducible symptom
Record the application and version, filename, source package, format, error text and intended record role. Note whether the file fails to open at all, opens at an unexpected scale or opens without the relationships expected from the original case. These observations narrow the next question.
Keep the original file unchanged. Test any copies through the authorized receiving route and name them separately. Converting repeatedly between formats can obscure where the first disagreement arose and can remove information needed by the sender or product support.
Choose the next check by the symptom
| Observed symptom | Next evidence to request |
|---|---|
| Cannot open the file | Exact supported format, complete download and application error. |
| Unexpected size | Source and receiving unit assumptions plus a documented reference dimension. |
| Unexpected position | Record-role and alignment information from the original package. |
| Missing color | Export format and whether appearance properties were included/supported. |
| Missing case context | Whether a native project was expected instead of a standalone surface. |
The Library of Congress describes STL as a triangular surface representation without standard appearance support. That format fact explains why a surface export should not be treated as a complete native case or a reliable carrier of every visual property.
Escalate a configuration issue precisely
If the same package works in the agreed source setup but not the receiver, collect the two configurations and the exact failure point. Ask current product support about the supported import route. Do not edit case metadata or rescale geometry merely to make the visible error disappear.
Illustrative note: “The file opens, but the receiving scale differs from the sender’s documented reference. The original is preserved; please confirm the intended unit interpretation before any changed copy is used.” This requests evidence rather than claiming a repair.
Confirm recovery against the receiving task
Once the cause is resolved, repeat the intended acceptance check with the replacement package. Opening in a general viewer may establish file readability but not suitability for continued CAD or manufacturing. Record the recovery and any remaining limitation.
If only a surface file is available and the receiver needs editable case context, the problem is a deliverable mismatch. Reagree the handoff with the sender rather than presenting format conversion as restoration of native design history.
