Crown CAD Review: Record Boundaries and Design Decisions

A crown review needs more than an attractive anatomy view. Distinguish what the record shows, what the designer selected and what the receiving team has approved.

Separate the record from the selected boundary

The preparation record is evidence; the selected design boundary is a decision made from that evidence and the responsible team’s instructions. If the boundary is unclear in the record, a change to the selected line does not itself resolve the missing information. Ask the submitting team for the appropriate clarification.

exocad documents tools for detecting and editing margin lines. Those tools support software operation; their availability does not establish which boundary is correct for an individual clinical record. Keep a marked view and the approved instruction together when reviewing a disputed area.

Review the crown in context

Crown review questions
QuestionEvidence and boundary
Does the selected boundary follow the approved record?Relevant views and explicit clarification for an unclear area.
Does the proposed form follow the brief?Named reference and the role it is meant to govern.
Are contact and relationship questions reviewable?Current neighboring/opposing context and governing relationship record.
Does the output match the receiving process?Current material/process requirements confirmed by that team.

This is a communication framework, not a universal set of cement-space, thickness or occlusal settings. Numerical requirements must come from the actual approved workflow and applicable manufacturer instructions.

Write a bounded correction

Illustrative correction request: “Please review the selected boundary at the marked distal area against the clarified record in R2; return a view showing the corrected selection.” The note identifies the decision, location and governing evidence without turning a screenshot into a clinical diagnosis.

If the revision changes geometry near an earlier reviewed area, identify dependent checks that the receiving reviewer wants repeated. Do not say that the entire crown has been approved because one boundary question was resolved.

Release the intended output

Name the current revision and requested output in the manifest. A review view, native project and manufacturing surface have different acceptance roles. Confirm the receiving task and keep unresolved questions visible.

For a recurring lab preference, use an approved preference packet. For a one-case instruction, label the exception. This distinction helps repeat work remain consistent without applying a special correction to every future crown.
